Education Technology (also known as “EduTech”) refers to an area of technology devoted to the development and application of tools (including software, hardware, and processes) intended to promote education.

Put another way, “EduTech is a study and ethical practice for facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.”

Although this developing field may sound like a specialized niche, its potential implications are far-reaching and affect many segments of the population. Read on to find out if you’re among those most likely to benefit from the advancement of EduTech, and how you can contribute to its growth.

Wikipedia defined EduTech as “the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources”.

There are several discrete aspects to describing the intellectual and technical development of educational technology:

✒ Educational technology as the theory and practice of educational approaches to learning.

✒ Educational technology as technological tools and media that assist in the communication of knowledge, and its development and exchange.

✒ Educational technology for learning management systems (LMS), such as tools for student and curriculum management, and education management information systems (EMIS).

✒ Educational technology itself as an educational subject; such courses may be called “Computer Studies” or “Information and communications technology (ICT)”.

Technology is a major part of students’ lives, and their academic training requires an introduction to scholarly uses of technology. It’s also part of the classroom: faculty and TAs use tools from multimedia presentations to computer simulations to clickers to enhance their teaching. Instructors don’t just experiment with different ways of using technology; they focus on using technology to reach educational goals more effectively and efficiently.

Educational media and tools can be used for:
❤ task structuring support: help with how to do a task (procedures and processes),

❤ access to knowledge bases (help user find information needed)

❤ alternate forms of knowledge representation (multiple representations of knowledge, e.g. video, audio, text, image, data)
